September Hike

Saturday, September 18, 10 am-noon, hike with tree and plant expert Sarah McMullen at Podick Conservation Area in Amherst. Podick Conservation Area is a sand plain of wind-blown deposits from glacial Lake Hitchcock. It hosts a wide variety of species, including bluestem, white cedar, red cedar, tupelo, and several reptiles. Vernal pools are found there in the spring. Trails through the area are level and easy to walk. Heavy rain will cancel the hike.

Directions: Podick Conservation Area lies on the west side of Rt. 116 in North Amherst, about 3.5 miles north of Rt. 9 and about 1/4 mile south of Annie's Garden Center.

November hike: Saturday, November 6, 2010 10 am-noon. Pete Westover will lead a hike at Pulpit Hill/Eastman Brook area in Amherst.
